James S. Green

James Stephen Green, age 91 , of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Friday, October 16th,  2020,  at Dubuque Specialty Care, surrounded by his loving family.  To honor Jim’s life, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with Father Steve Rosonke officiating.  Family and friends of Jim’s are invited to gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Everyone is requested to wear masks and social distance – as best we can.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery immediately following the service. Where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jim’s family.

Jim was born on February 15, 1929, in Cascade, IA, one of nine children to Stephen and Mildred (Herard) Green. He married Dorothea M. Hamel on August 28th, 1951, at St. Patrick’s Church.  They were blessed with 64 wonderful years together before Dorothea was sadly called home ahead of him on May 5, 2016.

Jim attended Loras Academy and graduated from St. Columbkille’s School in 1947.  Jim proudly served as a member of the Army National Guard and was a true patriot who loved his country and flying the American Flag daily.  His 3 favorite days of the year were Veterans Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and his Birthday.

Jim’s claim to fame was owning and operating Green Auto Supply on Central Avenue for 34 years. It was a family owned and operated business which he took great pride in. Knowing that all of his customers knew him as the guy that would not stop until he got them the part they needed, no matter what.

I am one who came to care for Mr Green at DBQ Specialty Care and I am one of many there who fell in love with him ❤️ And his many sayings lol but my favorite I will miss was my “hi honey, ok honey” Jim was so special to my dietary department and especially to one cook he adored. If Adam made it, Jim would eat it!! He loved Adam and vise versa and that will be missed but never ever forgotten. God bless you Mr Green and what an honor it has been for our paths to cross. May the otherside have lots of ice cream and Irish music and all the love you can handle. You were and still are loved by us at DBQ Specialty ❤️ And you have the best family that supported and loved us through a very difficult time and hard time and for that we are forever grateful. ❤️

Uncle Jim is and was one of a kind. His passion for family and his Irish Heritage were his heart and soul. It was always enjoyable to sit and chat with him. My only regret was not being able to spend more time but I also embraced the times we had together. Rest easy Jim you will be missed.

My Christian Sympathy to your family.

I have such fond memories of coming to Dubuque as a young engineer and finding Green Auto for all my auto fix-it needs. Jim was always helpful on offering tips for the repair.

Green Auto became my go-to place until your family sold it. I got to know Pat, Kathy, and Julie as they worked in the store, too, who continued to treat me as a valued customer and friend. What a wonderful family! You have a lot to be proud of.

I am sorry I did not have the opportunity to come to the services for Mr. Green. There are quite a few connections between the Green family and my own. Personally, I was a regular customer at Green Auto Supply ever since my first car, a 1966 Chevrolet Biscayne. I remember he was disappointed when I bought a used Toyota, tho! He was always so helpful, telling me how to gap the plugs for my Chevy 283, etc, etc. Daughter Kathy was in my class through St. Anthony grade school and Wahlert, I’m sorry I did not get a chance to see her Saturday, always such a nice person. I hope our paths cross around town again. My parents also knew Milt and family, Shorty, Lefty, etc; there was generally a story surrounding a mention of their names….I just wanted to express my condolences, and from my family, and for my parents, who are undoubtedly among those welcoming him into Heaven. It was a wonderful obituary, one to save…
