Janine D. “Jan” Zane, age 86, of Galena, IL, formerly of Orlando, FL, completed her earthly journey on April 27, 2026, at Ennoble Manor in Dubuque, IA. A celebration of life will be held at Lord of Love Lutheran Church, 219 Summit St, Galena, on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. Friends may visit beginning at 1:00 p.m. and following the service. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Janine’s family.
Janine was born on August 1, 1939, in Montevideo, MN, the daughter of David and Harriette (Faue) Darling. She was gifted with an outgoing personality and the ability to make friends wherever she went. She met the love of her life, Jack Zane, on July 4, 1961 and they were united in marriage on November 21, 1961. They were blessed with a wonderful life of nearly 65 years together. Janine graduated from William Woods College and joined the corporate banking world, primarily with Harris Bank in Chicago for many years and lastly with U.S. Bank in Galena. She and Jack also owned and operated Subway Stores in Galena, IL, Platteville and Janesville, WI, and owned Grant Hills Motel in Galena with their daughter and son-in-law prior to retirement.
In her free-time, Janine spent countless hours perfecting her needlepoint skills and her many lovely creations remain as cherished treasures for those who knew and loved her. She also enjoyed traveling, with Las Vegas and Hawaii being her favorite spots to visit.
But, for those who knew Janine, it was her gift for connecting with people that made the world a little better every day she was in it. This gift is evidenced by the multitude of friendships with customers, co-workers, neighbors, friends of friends and many others that endured for decades. A chance encounter with a stranger turned into a lifetime of friendship more times than anyone would imagine. She always had time to talk and listen, was always willing to help, and she possessed a generosity of heart, mind and spirit that was a blessing to all. She was, quite simply, somebody who made everybody feel like somebody. Her legacy of love will live within our hearts until we see her beautiful smile again.

Oh my where to begin with this. The first day I met he she treated me like my long last aunt. She was warm, gracious, fun loving and just had a sparkle about her. Every time I met her, it was like we hadn’t seen each other in years.
I remember when Harriette died some years ago., I went to the funeral and stood not far away. I remember even in the face of death, Janine has a glow about her.
Add in dear Jack and Diane and Scott and even once or twice Rob! The room was always electric.
Truly a woman who walked right past St. Peter into Heaven without a pang of worry!
Godspeed!
