Harvey D. Breiner

Harvey D. Breiner, age 88 of Dubuque, completed his earthly journey on Friday, January 18, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family.  To celebrate Harvey’s life, a private family service will be held on Memorial Day Weekend with burial in the Asbury Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Harvey’s family.

Harvey was born on July 18, 1930, in Peosta, IA, a son to Walter and Ruby (Stoltz) Breiner.  He learned very early in childhood the value of family and hard work and continued to faithfully role model them both throughout his entire life.  Harvey was a committed family man and eventually met his future bride, Mary Jane Morong.  The courtship didn’t take long and on June 11, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Church in Dubuque, the two were married.  They went on to be blessed with a beautiful family of their own, and 45 years together, before Mary was sadly called home ahead of him on August 14, 2000.  He later married Lou Ann Jones, she survives.

In his early years, Harvey had proudly served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army before he returned home to begin his life in the working world at Hart Implement   After only a few years there, a new opportunity had presented itself and he eagerly began his next 30 years of work with John Deere.  In 1986 he decided it was time to retire and enjoy the remaining years of his life as he saw fit each day.  He was lucky enough to be retired longer than he worked.

Harvey always enjoyed restoring tractors in his free-time, and the John Deere “M” was so meticulously done that not a single bolt escaped his very particular eye.  He and his son-in-law, Del, also restored a 110 which is still being routinely checked over by his great-grandson, Isaac.  In the fall, Harvey would help his son-in-law harvest the crops.  Harvey also enjoyed his annual hunting trips out west with his friends (sometimes bringing home more Coors than venison) and he also found that a day on the water with a fishing pole in hand, or even a little time trying his luck at the Sizzling 7 machine, were all considered perfect ways to spend a little downtime.  Many summer vacations were spent in Nisswa, MN that have ever-lasting memories. We will miss Harvey’s gentle soul more than he could know, along with his uncompromising organizational skills, but we are forever grateful for the legacy of love, kindness and commitment he leaves behind, and they will surely bring us comfort until we see him again.

I had the honor of meeting Harvey about 6 years ago & I realized instantly what a sweet, kind, gentle, loving man he was. After my grandson (Harvey’s great grandson) Isaac was born the times I was in the presence of the two of them were some of the most heartwarming times I have ever had!
    Rest in Paradise Harvey!

Condolences to all left behind to cherish Harvey’s memory. I used to visit his parents often as a youngster and remember him fondly. He was friendly and kind. As an adult, he attended family events and he shared stories and remained the wonderful man we all knew. My heart breaks for Kathy and Patty at this loss in their lives. Hugs to you all.
