Michael “Mike” Ryan

Michael “Mike” Ryan, age 70, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, at home while surrounded by his loving family.

Mike was born on October 6, 1955, in Dubuque, IA, to James R. and Rose (Kutsch) Ryan. He soon discovered his role as the only brother among many sisters would mean he was equal parts protector, peacekeeper, and lifelong target of good-natured teasing—roles he carried with humor and pride.

After graduating from Hempstead High School, Mike set out on a path that suited him well—one that kept him moving, meeting people, and always ready with a story. Over the years, he drove tour buses, delivery trucks, and taxicabs, navigating most routes from memory long before GPS. More than anything, he enjoyed the people—Mike had a natural way, easily striking up conversations and leaving passengers feeling like they had known him far longer than the length of their ride.

Mike was an avid Cubs and Bears fan, as well as a huge supporter of Women’s Hawkeye basketball and Caitlin Clark. He enjoyed many televised Cubs games spent watching with his mother, Rose, a time filled with hope and loyal cheering through every inning. One of his most unforgettable joys was celebrating the Cub’s 2016 World Series championship, holding close the belief that Rose was watching from heaven and sharing in the victory right alongside him.

Mike was a spirited competitor in football, rugby, and poker in his younger years. However, his most treasured tradition was the annual game of Risk with his high school friends, his “brothers” in every sense —a 45-year ritual filled with strategy, debate, laughter, and enduring friendship. In more recent years, he connected with others through “Words With Friends” and took on Candy Crush with the same enthusiasm,  never one to back down from a challenge.

Mike was deeply committed to his 33 years of sobriety, an accomplishment he earned through determination and quiet resilience. He also marked a hard-fought victory over stage 4 cancer, diagnosed in 2013. Through every challenge, he showed remarkable perseverance and did his best to embrace each day, even as the long-term effects of treatment grew more difficult in recent years.

At Ecumenical Towers, Mike was known as one of the “best dog dads ever,” often seen with his beloved pups, Beau and later Dory. They were his constant companions and were a true source of comfort and joy. His neighbors deeply appreciated his friendly nature and genuine concern for others. In return, his community was always there for him as well—offering support and care whenever he needed it most.

along with his step-mother,

numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Rose; his father, James; and his beloved dog, Beau.

Mike’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the medical professionals who supported him throughout his health journey, especially Jill, Jessica, and Becky, as well as the compassionate staff at Hospice of Dubuque.

A private Celebration of Life to honor Mike’s memory will be held for family and friends. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Mike’s family.
