Peter T. Woegens, age 90, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Sarasota, FL and Manhattan, N.Y., completed his earthly journey on May 2, 2025, at Luther Manor in Dubuque. To honor Peter’s life, a private family service is being held. Burial will be in the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Peter’s family.
Peter was born on July 9, 1934, in New York, N.Y., a son to Peter and Minna (Arfsten) Woegens. He was a good and decent man who faced the world head-on with one very strategic and simple motto; do right by him and he would do right by you in return. He grew up in New York and learned many important life lessons before entering adulthood. His years working at the family deli helped to instill the value of an honest days work. He eventually made his way into the U.S. Army where he honorable served his country. Upon returning to civilian life, Peter began his career with the Manhattan Fire Department. He made countless friends during his time there and served his community with pride.
Peter had met and married the love of his life, Marie Whelan, and the two were blessed with many years together and a daughter of their own to love and nurture. Sadly, Marie faced a longtime battle with MS and Peter was right by her side until the very end with the love and devotion of a husband, friend and partner in the truest sense of the words. Peter eventually moved to Florida after he retired and diligently invested innumerable hours perfecting his golf game. He enjoyed the relaxing environment, the challenge, and the warm sun overhead each time he hit the course.
Peter was well-known as a generous man, kind soul, and straight shooter. If you were fortunate enough to make it into his inner circle, his loyalty was unwavering. But, for those who knew Peter best, family was his pride and joy. He played each role that presented itself with dignity and joy, only discovering just how good life could be when grandchildren made their way into his life. It’s a truly heart-breaking day that has arrived with Peter’s absence now. The world will never be the same, but we are forever grateful for the love, lessons, and memories he so willingly shared with everyone who ventured into his life. Thank you, Peter, for being the best you anyone could ask for and may the Lord bless and keep you safe in His loving and grace-filled arms now until we meet again.
