Renate (Schöning) Arnz passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 19, 2021 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 82 years old.

Mrs. Arnz was born in 1938 in Halle, Germany, and grew up in Berlin during World War II. She was the daughter of Gregor and Helene Schöning. She met her husband, Ernst Arnz, in Dusseldorf, Germany.  In 1971, together with their two young sons, they emigrated to the United States so that her husband could continue his engineering work with Liebherr in Newport News, Virginia.

Mrs. Arnz lived in Newport News for almost 50 years and developed life-long friendships during that time. She loved aviation and antique aircraft, was a great tennis player and skier, a talented gardener, loved jazz and big band music, had a great laugh and sense of humor, and dearly loved her family, including spending time with her four grandchildren. During her time in Dubuque, she enjoyed a little garden on her balcony and feeding hummingbirds.

Mrs. Arnz is survived by her son, Dr. Michael Arnz (Jennifer) of Dubuque, Iowa; her son Alexander Arnz (Beth) of Fairfax, Virginia; and four grandchildren: Allison, Cameron, Evan, and Kendall.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernst Arnz.

Her family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Oak Park Place, Hospice of Dubuque, and Medical Associates/Mercy Hospital of Dubuque. 

A Celebration of Life will be planned in the future. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Dubuque, IA (in Memory of Mrs. Renate Arnz).
