Richard Francis McFarland, 62, of Dubuque, died peacefully on Nov 24, while under the care of Hospice of Dubuque. He was the son of Edward and Angela McFarland, who are deceased.
Richard was known around town as a sports fan who always had the latest scores on his clipboard. He especially enjoyed going to Albrecht Acres in Sherrill IA for outdoor activities.
Even after the loss of his parents, he was able to live, work, and thrive in Dubuque thanks to many special caregivers. He spent 30 great years at Bunker Hill Group Home in Dubuque, and was employed at Area Residential Care, where he worked on projects generously provided by Dubuque community businesses, especially McGraw Hill Publishing. He then moved to Sunnycrest Manor for the last 3 years, where he developed special friendships with 2nd and 3rd floor staff, who spent time with their buddy right to the last day. Rick really loved all his caregivers, and his family greatly appreciates the special attention they gave him.
A private memorial service for family will be scheduled at a later date.
Richard will be greatly missed by his brother Stephen of Madison, WI, and sisters Linda Williams of Cedar Rapids, IA, Karen Thomson of Phoenix, AZ, and Nancy Alling of Tempe, AZ.
Donations to Area Residential Care – 3355 Kennedy Circle, Dubuque, IA 52002, or Albrecht Acres – 14837 Sherrill Rd, Sherrill IA 52073 would be appreciated.
To honor Richard’s life, a private family graveside service will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque at a later date.
